Jose Mourinho has explained why he dropped Juan Mata for Manchester United’s clash against West Brom
The Portuguese boss guided his side to three Premier League wins on the bounce as Zlatan Ibrahimovic found the back of the net twice at The Hawthorns.
Eric Bailly missed the clash due to injury, but Daley Blind and Mata had to settle for a place on the bench.
Speaking about his decision to play Lingard, Mourinho claims it was all about trying to break down a well organised West Brom side.
“[He is] a different player than Juan [Mata],” Mourinho said.
“Both very good players obviously but different players.
“Against Palace we thought it was more important to have Juan’s quality to hold the ball up to keep playing inside positions.
“Today we thought it was important to have one of the three attacking players to be more of a runner and we did that with Jesse and later with Marcus [Rashford].”
They may have been better suited to Lingard’s style of play but Mata was one of our best performers before Henrikh Mkhitaryan was introduced and deserves a place int he side.
Man United will hope to make it four wins from four when they host Sunderland on Boxing Day, and with Mata struggling to make it into the side, hopes are we’ll see him back in action son.
