Growing a beard has become increasingly popular in 2016 and Juan Mata is among several Manchester United stars to champion facial fuzz. To mark the Spaniard's 28th birthday, we have asked the big question: who has the greatest beard in Reds history?
That may sound like a bizarre question – and yes, we know it is – but recent photos of Mata, David De Gea, Daley Blind and even Michael Carrick got us thinking about the previous players at Old Trafford who have abandoned their razors in pursuit of a more rugged, or chiselled, look.
Blind joined the debate during his recent takeover of United's Instagram account, posting this comment to the club's 10.4million followers around the world: "Who do you think has the best beard at #mufc? I think @JuanMataGarcia has a good one. @Carras16 as well!"
So without further ado, our gallery ranks United's top 10 beards and includes such luminaries as Ryan Giggs, Gary Birtles and, of course, the effortlessly cool George Best.
There are also special mentions for former club captains Roy Keane and Eric Cantona, for their services to beards in retirement. Take a look and see if you agree with our choices.
MATA OFFERS HIS VIEW
While attending a Manchester United Foundation event on Thursday afternoon, which was streamed live on Facebook, Mata was informed of our tongue-in-cheek countdown and the Spaniard was visibily pleased to be invovled. "Oh really?," the 28-year-old asked, while laughing. "That is a great birthday present. I don't take too much time taking care of my beard, but thank you for that!"
